re3data - the registry of research data repositories - is a globally recognized catalog for research data repositories that currently indexes more than 3300 repositories, databases and portals. The publicly accessible service was developed as part of two projects funded by the German Research Foundation (2012-2016) and is used by researchers and services worldwide for research. Scientific communities, funding organizations, research institutions and services rely on the up-to-date and accurate descriptions and consider re3data a reliable source.
The majority of the research data repositories listed are described in detail by a comprehensive schema, namely the re3data.org schema for describing research data repositories. Information icons visualize the most important criteria of the repositories and help researchers to identify a suitable repository for the storage and reuse of their data or to find repositories in which potential data are available for reuse.
A repository is indexed if the minimum requirements for inclusion in re3data.org are met: It must be operated by a legal entity, for example a sustainable institution (e.g. library, university), and provide clear information on the access conditions for the data and the repository as well as the terms of use. In addition, an English-language graphical user interface (GUI) and a focus on research data are required.
re3data was launched as a joint project of the Berlin School of Library and Information Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the Helmholtz Open Science Office, the KIT Library of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 2016, re3data joined forces with DataBib, a similar catalog that was created at the same time in the USA. Together with the Purdue University Library and the new partner DataCite, re3data will continue to operate as a DataCite service.
