KOMFOR | Competence Centre Research Data for Earth and Environmental Research

The KOMFOR competence center for research data is planned as a link between research institutions, publishers, libraries and an existing archive network for data from earth and environmental research. The general goal is the sustainable improvement of data availability and quality. Specifically, sustainable and reliable ways of publishing scientific data that meet the quality standards of scientific publishing are to be created. To this end, it is intended to create a uniform authority from the user's point of view, which will support scientific projects, institutes, research groups or even individual scientists in all questions of data management - from the project planning phase to data collection, quality assurance, registration and long-term archiving to the publication of data. The core of the project is the organizational and technical cooperation between data archives, publishers and libraries as well as the development of a corresponding web-based, customizable service platform. The project is coordinated with the plans for the ICSU World Data System (WDS). Parts of the organization and infrastructure are to be transferred to the WDS.

KOMFOR builds on preliminary work from the DFG project "Publication and Citation of Scientific Primary Data" (STD-DOI). KOMFOR is being carried out in cooperation with the Technical Information Library Hannover (TIB), the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen (MARUM, project management), the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ), the German Remote Sensing Data Center of the DLR (DLR-DFD) and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Marine and Polar Research (AWI Bremerhaven).
