EWIG | Development of workflow components for the long-term archiving of research data in the geosciences

The DFG-funded project EWIG was aimed at supporting the transfer of research data from different research environments to digital long-term archives. The focus of the work was on optimizing the ingest process at the transfer interface between discipline-specific data producers and any long-term archive.

In the geosciences, the workflows and infrastructures for research data management are already comparatively well developed - but there are still gaps in the data flow between the different stations in the “digital curation continuum”. The first project phase serves to identify existing gaps and to network with comparable projects in Germany through more than 20 expert discussions with infrastructure facilities and data centers.

In the second phase, questions of technical quality assurance of research data and workflows in a long-term archive were addressed. On the other hand, institutional policies for research data management were developed, which can serve as a model for various geoscientific institutions (see below). In addition, events in teaching and continuing education were designed and tested in university education in order to establish the topic of research data management more firmly in the discipline.
