Research software and scientific software development

Software is an essential part of the IT infrastructure that is used for scientific purposes and is developed and used in all sections of the GFZ. In this context, the eScience Centre is a point of contact for questions relating to scientific software development and offers advice and support in the development of high-quality and sustainable software, but also on topics such as the distribution and accessibility of software, the application and implementation of best practices, the granting of usage rights and software licenses as well as the publication and exploitation of software (see also Software Development Working Group at the GFZ and HIFIS).

In addition, the eScience Center establishes offers for GFZ and Helmholtz-wide networking of software developing colleagues and creates offers for training and further education (see also HIFIS and The Carpentries). In addition, the eScience Center works together with various stakeholders at the GFZ and other Helmholtz Centers as well as in national and international networks to establish processes in science and research that enable the sustainable use of software and the traceability, reproducibility and reuse of software-based research results (see also Task Group "Access to and reuse of scientific software" of the Helmholtz Open Science Working Group and de-RSE e.V. - Gesellschaft für Forschungssoftware).
