The Deep Thermal Field

For the socially relevant exploration of georesources (energy, water), it is important to know the deep thermal field and to understand the coupling between fluid and heat transport in the subsurface. Also deformation strongly depends on temperature. Based on the 3D structural models, we test which digital twins reproduce the temperatures observed in boreholes or heat flow measurements at the surface. Using 3D simulations, we predict deep subsurface temperature distributions and investigate which heat transport mechanisms are effective at which scale. We use coupled thermo-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical simulations to investigate how competing interests such as geothermal energy production and groundwater safety can be combined.
