Our section recently hosted an influential workshop on GNSS Reflectometry (GNSS-R) in collaboration with the Working Group 4.3.10 on Remote Sensing using GNSS Reflected Signals of International Association of Geodesy (IAG) and the Joint Study Group on GNSS Remote Sensing of Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS). Held on Nov 26-27, 2024 at GFZ as part of the Geo.X network’s "Grow Your Idea" initiative, the workshop brought together around 30 leading international experts and those from the Geo.X network (including online) to explore the cutting-edge applications of GNSS-R for Earth observation and its potential contributions to monitoring climate, atmosphere, hydrology, and natural hazards.
Organized by GFZ, Technische Universität Berlin, and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the workshop provided a platform to discuss advancements in GNSS-R technology and foster interdisciplinary synergies. A significant focus was placed on recent and upcoming satellite missions, particularly the PRETTY and HydroGNSS missions, highlighting their potential to advance satellite based remote sensing and provide critical data for addressing global challenges in Earth sciences.
A significant outcome of the workshop was the consensus to develop a COST Action proposal, aiming to formalize and enhance interdisciplinary collaborations across Europe. This initiative will create a structured framework for research and innovation in GNSS-R applications, ensuring sustained progress in the field.
