„How was the Bushveld Complex assembled?“

DFG-SPP 1006

Description:

The Bushveld Complex in South Africa is the largest igneous intrusion on Earth and the world’s leading source of strategic metals of the platinum elements group (PGE). This project will test a promising new concept of how the intrusion was assembled: repeated intrusions of a crystal-rich magma "slurry" from an external magma chamber.

The focus is on a continuous, ca. 2700-m long drill core profile through the Main Zone of the complex, which will be investigated with a combination of geochemical, geophysical and microtextural methods.
